Stonewall Jackson was shot by his own men on May 2, 1863. Confederate pickets mistook him for a Union cavalryman and fired on him. Jackson was seriously wounded and died eight days later. His death was a major blow to the Confederate army and contributed to their defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg.
