Marcos was originally involved with the FLN, or the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, before moving to Chiapas. The FLN was a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary group that was active in Nicaragua during the 1970s and 1980s. It was responsible for a number of bombings and assassinations, and was eventually defeated by the government of Daniel Ortega.
