Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar shared the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics with William A. Fowler for their contributions to Theory of stellar evolution. Chandrasekhar's work on the stability of white dwarfs showed that they could not have masses greater than about 1.4 solar masses, while Fowler's work on nucleosynthesis showed how the elements heavier than helium were formed in stars.
