Sugar Ray Robinson began his professional boxing career in 1940. He was born in 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, and started boxing as an amateur at the age of 12. He won the National Golden Gloves welterweight title in 1940, and turned professional the same year. He won his first 40 professional fights, and became the world welterweight champion in 1946.
