Sulaimaniyah was named after Sulaiman Pasha, a Kurdish military commander and governor of the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. He founded the city in 1784 as a military base and named it after himself. The city grew into a major cultural and commercial center and is now the capital of the Sulaimaniyah Governorate and one of the most important cities in Iraqi Kurdistan.
