Answer
Monkwearmouth was the original settlement on the north bank of the River Wear. It was founded in 674 when King Ecgfrith of Northumbria granted land to Benedict Biscop to establish a monastery. This monastery, along with Jarrow monastery, later formed the dual Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Abbey.
