Surayud's father, Sunthorn Surakiat, defected to the Communist Party of Thailand. He was a high-ranking officer in the Royal Thai Army who had become disillusioned with the government's corruption. Sunthorn became a member of the Communist Party in 1946 and was one of the leaders of the Communist uprising in 1948. He was arrested and executed by the Thai government in 1951.
