Surayud Chulanont was promoted to supreme commander of the Royal Thai Army in 2003. This was after the 2003 Thai coup d'état, which was led by Surayud. The coup d'état was in response to the corruption of then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Surayud was appointed prime minister by King Bhumibol Adulyadej after the coup d'état. He served as prime minister until 2006, when he was overthrown in another coup d'état.
