The Burmese were the rulers of Siam (present-day Thailand) when Taksin rose to prominence. After the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese in 1767, Taksin rallied a group of loyalists and waged a successful military campaign against the Burmese to liberate Siam. His efforts led to the establishment of the Thonburi Kingdom and his reign as King Taksin the Great.
