Tanya S. Chutkan was a lawyer before being a judge. She worked as an attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she litigated civil rights cases, and as a law clerk for Judge Merrick Garland of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
