Tanya S. Chutkan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966. She attended Yale Law School and clerked for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before going into private practice. She was nominated to the District Court for the District of Columbia by President Barack Obama in 2013 and confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 93-5. She is the first Jamaican-American woman to serve on the federal bench.
