Archbishop of Genoa was the position held by Bertone before he became Cardinal Secretary of State. Bertone's ecclesiastical career began in the Archdiocese of Vercelli, where he was ordained a priest in 1960. He later served as a professor of moral theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. In 1991, he was appointed Archbishop of Vercelli, and in 1995, he became Archbishop of Genoa.
