Answer
The summit of Mount Everest was reached on 29 May 1953, by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, as part of the ninth British expedition to the mountain. The pair reached the summit at 11:30 am local time, and spent about 15 minutes taking photographs and planting flags before beginning their descent.
