Gnosticism, the heresy against which Tertullian wrote, posited a distinction between the material world, viewed as evil, and the spiritual world, seen as good. Gnostics believed that only a select few possessed the knowledge (gnosis) to attain salvation and that this knowledge was hidden from the masses.
