Answer
Tewodros II's suicide followed his defeat at the Battle of Magdala in April 1868. The British expeditionary force, led by General Robert Napier, launched a campaign against Tewodros, who had imprisoned several British subjects. Despite Tewodros' desperate attempts to defend his mountain stronghold, the British forces eventually overpowered him. Realizing his inevitable defeat and unwilling to surrender, Tewodros took his own life to avoid capture.
