Tharman Shanmugaratnam made his political debut in the People's Action Party (PAP), the ruling political party in Singapore. He joined the PAP in 1974 and was first elected to Parliament in 1980. He has held a number of ministerial positions in the Singapore government, including Minister for Finance, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Education. He is currently the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore.
