Brueghel worked as a court painter for Archduke and Duchess Albrecht and Isabella, the governors of the Habsburg Netherlands. He was commissioned by the archduke to paint a series of paintings of the months, which were displayed in the palace of Brussels. The paintings are now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
