Mahela Jayawardene was awarded the ICC Best International captain of the year in 2006 for his successful leadership of the Sri Lankan cricket team. Jayawardene captained Sri Lanka to their first ever Test series win in Australia in 2003 and their first ever Test series win in England in 2007. He also led Sri Lanka to the final of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, where they lost to India.
