Theodosius I was the first emperor to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, and he also helped to shape the orthodox doctrine of Christianity. He did this by calling the Council of Nicaea, which condemned Arianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Theodosius also helped to spread Christianity by building churches and monasteries, and by encouraging missionaries to spread the faith.
