Theodosius I, the last emperor to rule both the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, died in 395. His two sons, Arcadius and Honorius, succeeded him, with Arcadius becoming emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire and Honorius becoming emperor of the Western Roman Empire. This division of the empire was a major factor in its eventual collapse.
