Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was the religious name of Edith Stein, a German-Jewish philosopher and Catholic convert who became a Carmelite nun. She was born in 1891 and died in 1942 at the Auschwitz concentration camp. She was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
