Theodora was married to Theophilos, the Byzantine emperor from 829 to 842. Theophilos was the son of Emperor Michael II and Empress Euphrosyne. He was a devout iconoclast, and his reign was marked by religious persecution. Theodora was a devout Orthodox Christian, and she is credited with helping to bring about the end of iconoclasm. After Theophilos' death, Theodora ruled as regent for her young son, Michael III.
