His middle name was Grigorievich, which is a Russian patronymic derived from his father's first name, Grigory. Dobzhansky was born in the Russian Empire in 1900 and immigrated to the United States in 1927. He was a professor at Columbia University and the University of California, Davis. He died in 1975.
