Why did Theodosius I march west in 388 and 394?

  • To defeat invading armies

  • To defeat two pretenders, Magnus Maximus and Eugenius

  • To conquer new lands

  • To visit his western provinces

Answer

In 388 and 394 Theodosius I, Roman Emperor of the East, marched west to defeat two pretenders, Magnus Maximus and Eugenius. Maximus had proclaimed himself emperor in 383 after the assassination of Valentinian II, the western emperor. Theodosius, who had been regent of the West, marched west and defeated Maximus at the Battle of the Save in 388. Maximus was killed, and his son Flavius Victor was executed.
