Nhất Hạnh was permitted to visit Vietnam after his exile in 2005. He had been exiled from the country since 1966, after he publicly opposed the Vietnam War. Nhất Hạnh returned to Vietnam in 2005 to attend the funeral of his mother. He has since made several trips back to the country, and has been active in promoting peace and reconciliation between the Vietnamese people.
