Richard Burr, the former senior U.S. senator from North Carolina, was succeeded by Thom Tillis. Tillis took office in January 2015, after winning a close election against incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan. Burr had announced his retirement in 2015 and did not seek re-election. Tillis, a member of the Republican Party, previously served in the North Carolina House of Representatives and as Speaker of the North Carolina House.
