Beecham began his career as a conductor in 1899, when he was hired to lead the New Symphony Orchestra of London. He remained with the orchestra for two seasons, and then moved on to conduct other orchestras in Europe and the United States. He was a highly successful conductor, and is considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
