Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830) was a British portrait painter who was elected as the fourth president of the Royal Academy in 1820. He was born in Bristol and studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Gold Medal in 1787. Lawrence went on to become one of the most successful portrait painters of his time, and his works are now held in major collections around the world.
