The Abbey of Gethsemani was founded in 1848 in Bardstown, Kentucky. Thomas Merton entered the abbey in 1941 and lived there for most of his life, until his death in 1968. Merton was a prolific writer and his work includes poetry, essays, and autobiography. He was also a social activist and advocate for peace and justice.
