Thomas Stafford first became an astronaut in 1962. He was a member of the second group of astronauts selected by NASA, and he went on to fly on three space missions. He was the commander of Apollo 10, the first mission to fly around the moon. He also commanded the Skylab 3 mission, and he was the commander of the first space shuttle mission, STS-1.
