Stafford had a career spanning almost 20 years and logged 507 hours in space. His most famous mission was Apollo 10, which flew to within 96 miles of the moon's surface, the closest any manned spacecraft has ever come. Stafford also commanded Gemini 9, the first mission to dock two spacecraft in orbit, and the Skylab 3 mission, the longest space mission to date.
