At the time of his death, Silverstein was the longest-held prisoner in solitary confinement in the United States. He had been in solitary confinement for over 35 years, since 1980. Silverstein was convicted of the 1971 Attica prison uprising, in which 11 guards and 39 prisoners were killed.
