Thomas Williams died in 1770. Williams was a Welsh poet, best known for his epic poem "The Bard" (1757), which was inspired by an incident in the Welsh uprising of 1745. The poem is set in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, and tells the story of a Welsh bard who is captured by English soldiers and ordered to sing for them. The bard refuses, and is executed.
