Islamic State controlled Tikrit before the Iraqi government regained control in 2015. The city was captured by the Islamic State in June 2014 and held for over a year. In 2015, the Iraqi government launched an offensive to retake the city and it was recaptured in April of that year. The city was severely damaged during the fighting and many of its residents fled.
