Saddam Hussein was born in Tikrit, Iraq, on April 28, 1937. He was the son of a poor peasant farmer and grew up in a poor and violent household. As a young man, he joined the Ba'ath Party and quickly rose through the ranks. He became the leader of Iraq in 1979 and ruled the country with an iron fist for nearly 25 years.
