Tokugawa Hidetada was the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, the first hereditary military dictatorship of Japan. He was the son of the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and succeeded him after his death in 1616. Hidetada ruled for 38 years, until his death in 1651. During his reign, the Tokugawa shogunate consolidated its power and Japan enjoyed a period of peace and stability.
