S R Nathan (1924-2016) was the sixth President of Singapore, serving from 1999 to 2011. He was a former civil servant and diplomat who had also served as the Chief of Defence Force. Nathan was a popular president, known for his sense of humour and his work to promote racial harmony and inter-religious understanding. He was succeeded as president by Tony Tan Keng Yam.
