Trần Đại Quang was elected President of Vietnam by the National Assembly on April 2, 2016. He was the fifth president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and served until his death in September 2018. Prior to his presidency, Quang held various high-ranking positions in the Vietnamese government and military, including Minister of Public Security and Deputy Prime Minister.
