Tran Ngoc Chau initially joined the Việt Minh to fight for Vietnam's independence. The Việt Minh was a communist-led organization that fought for the independence of Vietnam from French colonial rule. Chau joined the Việt Minh in 1944 and served as a propaganda officer. He was later appointed as the head of the Việt Minh's military forces in South Vietnam.
