Trương Tấn Sang took office as President in 2011, becoming the 9th President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. He was re-elected in 2016 and served until 2021. Sang was a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam and a career diplomat. He served as Foreign Minister from 2006 to 2011.
