Trương Tấn Sang was nominated as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2011. He was then elected to the position by the National Assembly in 2011. He served as President until 2016, when he was succeeded by Nguyễn Phú Trọng.
