Trương Tấn Sang proposed Nguyễn Tấn Dũng as the new head of government after the Vietnamese Communist Party's 11th National Congress in 2011. Dũng had previously served as deputy prime minister from 2006 to 2011. He was elected prime minister by the National Assembly on 28 June 2011 and took office on 1 July 2011.
