Túpac Amaru II was self-proclaimed as Sapa Inca, meaning "sole ruler" or "emperor" in Quechua, the language of the Inca Empire. He sought to restore the Inca Empire and free his people from Spanish rule, leading an indigenous uprising against the Spanish colonial authorities in Peru in the late 18th century.
