Tyler Perry was born Emmitt Perry Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1969. His father left the family when Perry was a young child, and his mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Perry was raised by his grandmother and attended a predominantly white school, where he was bullied for being black. After graduating from high school, Perry moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to pursue a career in acting.
