Umberto Nobile was an Italian aeronautical engineer, aviator and polar explorer. He is most famous for his participation in the 1926 Norge airship expedition, which was the first to fly over the North Pole, and for the 1928 Italia airship expedition, which ended in disaster when the airship crashed on the ice off the coast of Spitsbergen.
