While they both lived and wrote in the same time period, there is no evidence to suggest that Spenser and Marlowe were rivals. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that they were friends or at least acquaintances. For example, both men were members of the same literary circle, and Spenser's poem "The Faerie Queene" contains a reference to Marlowe's play "Tamburlaine the Great."
