Education and the freedom of enslaved people in the United States were the beneficiaries of Tadeusz Kościuszko's will. A Polish military leader and engineer, Kościuszko fought in the American Revolutionary War and later led an uprising against Russian rule in Poland. His will, written in 1798, dedicated his assets to the education of young Americans and the purchase and emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
