Who found Neptune on the same night he received Le Verrier's letter?

  • Johann Gottfried Galle

  • Isaac Newton

  • Albert Einstein

  • Galileo Galilei

Answer

On September 23, 1846, the German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle found Neptune on the same night he received Le Verrier's letter. Le Verrier had calculated that Neptune must be orbiting the sun beyond Uranus, and sent Galle the coordinates where it should be. Galle was able to find Neptune using the telescope at the Berlin Observatory, just a few hours after receiving Le Verrier's letter.
