The capture of Jerusalem was the ultimate objective of the First Crusade, which Pope Urban II had passionately advocated for in 1095. However, Urban did not live to witness the realization of this goal. He passed away in 1099, just a few months before the crusaders successfully breached Jerusalem's defenses and reclaimed the city from Muslim control.
