Clement IV was the successor of Pope Urban IV. Clement was born Guido Grimaldi in Genoa, Italy. He became a priest and was elected pope in 1265. Clement's papacy was marked by a number of conflicts, including the conflict between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Clement also attempted to reform the church and to improve relations between the church and the state. Clement died in 1268.
